Randall Gay was hilarious when he talked about QB's licking their hands after having their hands up the center's butt the whole game.

But in all seriousness I wanted to ask about Cholly Mac. In the movie they portrayed him in a heart warming, idyllic, and legendary tone. They made him look like a great man (which I believe he certainly was) and iconic to LSU. I'm only 21 so obviously I wasn't around then, but did the movie describe and paint the picture of Charlie Mac correctly?

BTW, the documentary was terrific and they packed a ton into 3 hours. I'm glad they provided a lot more history than Roll Tide/War Eagle.

IMHO if you already know the history of LSU, it's boring...i was expecting to see a lot more highlights and a lot less talking

I was in school at the end of Charlie's time and for Arnsparger. He had a "good ole boy" reputation. I was mixed on the Help Mac Pack thing knowing many who were adamant on both sides. I really liked the guy and his appeal but just wanted to see LSU in the hunt for NC's and he just could not get it done.

Here's to Nick and Les. Jan 9 is beyond anything I could have ever fictionalized.

I received the DVD for Christmas. I enjoyed it. It felt like an homage to a coming championship.

LSU official colors were orange and green at one time, or some hideous combination like that.

Charlie Mac was very respected in coaching circles and was president and exec director of the AFCA for quite a while.

As far as the DVD goes, watched it last night and really enjoyed it. I thought it could have been better edited and shortened a bit. They left out some huge games as well, 61-17/Archie Who in particular. Also there were several times where they didn't identify who was talking.

I thought the first 45 minutes was generic, vanilla and very boring and couldve been about any football team. It got better as it went on. As an LSU fan I enjoyed it overall, but had a lot of wasted time in it.

I believe the narator hinted by the laugh at the end of the piece that the colors were mis-reported by the N.O. paper.

I think most people thought that Mac was a good and honest person. There was always plenty of debate as to his coaching ability. Most thought he was a great defensive coach but not head coach. He could never seem to put together a really great season and he wasn't the greatest public speaker or PR man. I think the players respected him but we always seemed to lose a couple of games that we shouldn't but we would win some we shouldn't too. I don't think he was a legend but he was a good person. IMO

That seems like the general perception I get. Did he talk funny and have some random sayings like the movie showed?

Mac was country and sounded that way. He never seemed comfortable in front of a crowd or cameras early in his career. If there was a way to screw up an old "country saying" he could find it. So I don't think his Mac-isms were intentional but they were funny many times. Some of the things he would say sounded dumb and I think that hurt his public image with fans.

Colors: Purple and Gold

There is some discrepancy in the origin of Royal Purple and Old Gold as LSU's official colors.

It is believed that those colors were worn for the first time by an LSU team in the spring of 1893 when the LSU baseball squad beat Tulane in the first intercollegiate contest played in any sport by Louisiana State University. Team captain E.B. Young reportedly hand-picked those colors for the LSU squad.

Later that year, the first football game was played. On November 25, 1893, football coach/chemistry professor Dr. Charles Coates and some of his players went into town to purchase ribbon to adorn their gray jerseys as they prepared to play the first LSU gridiron game.

Stores were stocking ribbons in the colors of Mardi Gras -- purple, gold and green. -- for the coming Carnival season. However, none of the green had yet arrived at Reymond's Store at the corner of Third and Main streets. Coates and quarterback Ruffin Pleasant bought up all of the purple and gold stock and made it into rosettes and badges.

So in what athletic contest did we wear blue and white????

Naahh... Not like he was a lawyer or somethin. Mac was all "small-town" from Lewisville, Arkansas. I lived there myself for several years. Mac may be the only Red Devil that ever made it big. That family is as down to earth as it gets. His brother still lives there. I think he is in the old Southwest Conference Hall of Fame as a ref.

Did Arnsparger have the potential to be one of the better LSU coaches if he would've stayed?
