Bama's TE crossing route and "picking" the DB

Against Auburn, Bama ran a shallow crossing route to the TE across the middle for much success. On these plays, Bama put its wide receiver from the opposite side on a shallow crossing route too. Gary Danielson pointed out on a couple of occasions that the DB from Auburn was getting picked by the Bama receiver coming the other way. There was never contact but the DB/LB covering the TE was having to run around the wide receiver which gave the TE enough room for a completion with YAC.
My question to those who know college rules: Is a wide receiver pick legal? What makes it illegal (contact, etc.)? Did any of you catch onto this and say "that is something we will have to stop"?
Richardson will get his 80+ yards rushing, but there are two plays that worry me in the BCS game: 1) that dang wheel route with TR wide open and 2) this shallow TE crossing route that looks almost unstoppable with a crisp pass.

I think it becomes a pick when it becomes obvious that it is a pick. Just contact wouldn't necessarily mean its a pick.

they did this against us too

Just blow up their WRs at the LOS and the play is a bust...assuming our LBs don't shite the bed.

It becomes a pick when the refs call it

They've been running this play all season, including the first game against LSU. This isn't something new to worry about

Its called a rub route. Commomly referred 2 as "mesh" routes as well. You see it all the time with some of the most basic man beaters such as Slant/chute or Slant/out combinations.

Further more, the mesh is a staple of passing attacks.
It works against both man and zone. Its a beautiful thing actually.
The 2 wrs run as close to each other as possible. One wr is reading the others man. If he's following him, its man coverage, keep running. If he has no one trailing, its zone, find the hole and sit down.

Arkansas and UGA did similar things, most teams with good catching TE do it, I wish LSU would do it more

Well, one way to stop it would be to blow up the WR running the pick. A full-speed hit from Mo or Reid will make them think twice about it.
Technically, it's legal, and I've seen players use the Umpire on this as well. If the DB sells it, he could get the call for offensive interference - but it's seldom called.
Given that we have a big 12 crew, and they are a pass-happy league, I would expect they will lean toward the offense on these plays.

It is very much "illegal", however, if done without contact the refs may not call it.

Bama is notorious for doing this with the passing game. Me personally, b/c it's AJ on the other side, I would sit on those shallow crossing routes and out-routes and force AJ to go down the field.
If he chooses to throw those short patterns it would be pick 6 all game long. I don't mind putting my corners at a disadvantage b/c we play man-to-man all game long anyways.
Just my opinion.

what needs to happen, is which ever side the TE releases from, the strong or weak side;depending if they motion him to the opposite side, the LB responsible for the TE needs to lay a hard hit on him and slow down his route, disrupt his timing.. we cant just let him or any of the WR take off untouched...
