Is there any consensus on these? I see them show up in a bunch of photos. I alway pass on them unless someone in the blind promises to take them.

If you do shoot them, how do you prepare them?

Unless we are wearing out mallards or greys early we will generally shoot them. I don't eat them though. I usually find a brother who will take them.

One thing for sure, you never miss a spoonie.

I do not shoot unless nothing else is flying, then only for gumbo.

Ag fields? I will let them fly if we are wearing them out. If not, I'll harvest them and eat'em up like I would any other duck.

Marsh? They get a pass.

breast them & make duck bombs. I always end up with 20-25 after the season at the camp. Makes great tailgate food.

I am not a duck hunter but was told last week they are a trash duck. When I took pics to send to my co workers that duck hunt my friend said "aw crap they are going to think we are proud of killing spoon bills"

Typically I don't shoot spoonies on purpose. Occasionally there is one of those hunts where we shoot them if it's the only thing flying. Always donate them to Leroy and Pookie in the event they are killed.

They eat your rice too, and somebody needs to kill some of them. We pass on them unless it's slow and just one of those rare days that they need a beat down. One thing that always happens is that you never miss when shooting at a spoony, even a long passing shot.

I will not burn powder on Smiling Mallards. Instant ridicule in my hunting circle.

Worse than shooting a duck on the water IMO...

Rice field spoonies taste fine to me, any way I've tried to cook them.
Like any other duck, it is mostly about the prep. I breast, soak in salted water 24 hrs, freeze. Soak again before cooking.

They aren't teal or woodies, but they are as good as anything else where I hunt. So I shoot'em unless I'm trying to get a brag bag when the mallards are flying.

Let the women & kids practice as long as no other ducks are flying.
