Last season, with the exception of the Seattle game, our secondary played fairly well considering the number of injuries that we had. This year I have noticed a drop off in production from all of DBs. The only one playing close to the level of the last few years is Greer.

I think our biggest loss this past offseason was Dennis Allen. He is obviously doing a great job as the Defensive Coordinator for the Broncos.

The question is do we need to replace Tony Oden and Mike Mallory and bring in a Secondary coach that understands how to complement Gregg Williams' aggressive blitz packages? Is it even the coaches fault that Porter, Jenkins, Robinson, Torrence, and Harper are not as productive as they should be or is it a scheme issue?

This is just something I was thinking about in regards to what changed in our defensive coaching and schemes.

It's pretty simple. Stop playing 15 yards off the receiver when there's an all out blitz. We do this every damn game.

We aren't exactly playing lights out on the defensive line either. When your pass rush isn't very effective, the secondary will always suffer more because of it.

Our secondary isn't bad. The problem is the pressure. When you bring 8 people and not one gets to the QB...you're going to have serious problems. Our front seven is terrible. Especially the front four. Harper leads the team in sacks. That is beyond sad.

I don't care if you have 5 Darrelle Revis in the secondary, if you're letting a QB sit back there all day, he is going to make your secondary look horrible.

Saints play 15 yards off the ball with DBs because they have no confidence in the pass rush. You can only play tight man coverage so long before they get wide open. Which would probably mean huge plays constantly...

I get that Williams love to Blitz, and that's his thing. But he really needs to learn how to adjust. Several times in a game I'll cringe at how much we blitz repeatedly only to be exploited.

This. All this. Our secondary is the only good part of our defense. They get burned at times because they get left on an island more than any secondary in the league by far. It's not that our secondary needs improvement, it's that we ask way too much of them because the front 7 sucks donkey arse. Our secondary would look elite with even an average front 7.
