The peak rutting week for Area 6 occurs in about 2 weeks according to the calendar.
When do they start? Is it possible that what I saw yesterday of deer running around all crazy like means that its starting?
I may be older than a lot of you but I'm new to this deer hunting stuff.......
TIA

They may be chasing but the does are probably not receiving. I think this is called the "seeking" phase.

This. and the younger bucks are more prone to "seeking" early in the year. Just like with humans, it takes a couple of years of fricking to get that swagga. The big boys know when the womenz want them.. But that dont mean one wont get frisky, and you can definitely be seeing some early courting right now.

It was really cool yesterday. This buck kept running around. He finally ran towards my ground blind and past it about 5 yards to my left. The does were trying to eat acorns and the little bit of corn I have out there.

I haven't even looked at the calender, but i can tell you that the next 3 weeks in southeast LA is the rut. The second week is the best of the 3.
So basically - Dec 5 thru Christmas!

That calender seems to be a little off for area 6, at least where I hunt. The bucks don't seem to move until Christmas at the earliest, but it doesn't really pick up for another week or two after that. Then again around mid-feb. Have only recently started to see signs of 'em.

The area 2 forecast was dead on. My question is concerning the 2nd period, I have never been able to tell anything is going on has anyone?

Depends on how many does you have. IF you are heavily populated with does, and some do not get hit, they will go back into heat about 2 weeks later, i wanna say

Not sure what calender or what part of Area 6 this may be referring to, but in the Plaquemine/White Castle area the rut wont peak until after Christmas.
This will last until mid-way thru the second week of Jan and then from about 10-17th or so we try to catch bucks "wandering". These deer are looking for un-bred does and just kinda wander the property at anytime of the day. Jan 15th is known as a great time to see such activity.

Where do you hunt around Plaquemine/White Castle?
I get to do a little deer hunting right outside of Plaquemine. I'm finding the same thing as you as far as the rut, after Christmas 'till mid-Jan as the best time to hunt.

some areas will have a second and even a 3rd rut. Second are the does which didn't get "it' the first time around. Third is usually some early born yearling does coming into their first estrus.
Biggest buck ever taken on the Georgia property I hunt was an 8 1/2 yr old that dressed 242lbs. Grossed over 160 B@C.Was following a yearling doe, middle of the afternoon and was shot by my best friends dad who was sitting on a stump waiting to shoot stray dogs/coyotes that had been seen in that area.
That "young stuff" will get an old man in trouble I tell ya!
