Any of you outdoors people have an older Jeep CJ?

I've been thinking about buying one. Are they a pain to keep up and running?

It's a 1975, V8, 3 speed. It's not very nice but it would just be for fun..

I don't have one now but have in the past. There is always something not working right on them like any old truck, little worse since they are generally abused. You need to be somewhat mechanically competant.

Try to get one as stock as possible. A cut wiring harness is a nightmare but overall they are pretty basic vehicles

I don't know all that much and haven't had to really deal with any car issues in the past, but it is something I would like to learn and think it could be fun.

My real issue is I don't have enough money to just keep pouring into it if something is wrong.

I bought an old cj7 about 8-9 yrs ago for 500$
SPent about 500-600 bucks on it to get it going and some new mud tires, sold it to some dude in texas for 2500.
Wish Id kept it.

Had a couple guys that used to own one tell me selling it that was smartest thing I ever did.

Yeah, this one is listed at a grand but it does run. My problem is I'm an unemployed college student so if something goes wrong I won't be able to just throw some money down and get it fixed. I'll probably just hold off.

I'm driving an '85 CJ7 as a daily driver these days. Mine is dependable as hell and I've driven it like crazy. It all depends on how the thing's been cared for. The 4.2L inline 6 engine is a great engine, but it's carbureted and less and less folks work on those. If the thing's been in water or mud then you might have issues like bearings going out. Some of the old CJ's have cracks in the frames, too. If you're really serious, take it to Phil at Searchers and ask him to look at it. He'll tell ya what you need to know.
As for working on it, parts are cheap and the machine is pretty easy to work on if you are a do it yourselfer.
