Could it be?

Companies have a limited advertising budget. If LSU /Auburn were on CBS at 7pm, they would be compete ting against two other sporting events, which would be drawing the same market these advertisers are going for...

I find it funny that 10.4 people watched the Florida/LSU Game. What were the other 300 Million people in this country watching?

Of course, a good portion of the $ is directly derivative of the traditions.

and that game will not draw 10 million. im not saying CBS has to show 1 prime time game a week, although it sure would be nice. but why settle for only 1. flex-scheduling works in the NFL, why not college?

Not LSU at 7pm... That's for sure.

I'd like to see the previous Saturday's Nielsen ratings to compare the two spots.

it also depends who was playing

TheDoc,

I am in no way questioning your fanhood....anyone who post 66343 times on a Tiger's website is a Tiger fan. And you make a lot of good points. I've agreed with you many times.

But how can you defend, represent or argue against an LSU tradition that has been going on for decades?

CBS definitely makes money off an LSU night game. LINK

As I've said before, CBS wants another night game, but the contract binds them. ESPN wants it too.

The matter at hand is attempting to amend the contract in time for next year, finding a way to convince the LSU athletic department, the SEC, and the TV people that night games are still relevant to the fanbase. That having one fluke/perfect storm year that prevented a night game should be limited to that one year.

Do you agree in wanting to see more LSU v SEC night games on networks? At the very least one per year?

If so, why dispute? If not, why not?

I've read this whole thread. Seems the problem is mainly with ESPN picking LSU games @ 2:30pm. They could (should be asked/told to) schedule them for evenings on 1 of their networks more often. (I know CBS will pickup some pm games, not all).

The contract(s) must be re-worked when the conference is expanded, so.....

PS Network (CBS etc) Sat evening shows suck ratings.
Plus with Fball they get a 4 hour show.

I love night games much more than 2:30 kickoffs. Don't get me wrong.

But that's just the way things are with the hand that has been dealt.

LSU is a winning program, and CBS gets first pick of the games. #1 team in the country carries weight with sponsors ect.

I understand both sides, but I'm a realist. I know where LSU's bread is buttered. Where they get their money from.

I'm also a fan, of course i want night games.
I like to tailgate and drink/eat all day.

But I know that things are the way they are for a reason, and that reason is a lot of $$$$.

The sec and CBS chartered this deal.

LSU football whether you want to admit it or not, is a product that CBS wants to sell to big markets and get sponsors for.

Like I said, of course I'm a fan, but I also understand all the aspects of the situation CBS, LSU, and the sec are currently in.

what you fail to get is we are the consumer. What we say matters, it will take the fans putting the money elsewhere before they get it.

The only way that would happen is if 60K+ fans gave up their season tickets which ain't happening.
Even if it did, there are people waiting in the wings to get their own season tickets. Boycotting isn't the answer.

Ok, I have said this before and I will say it again.

Contracts are negotiated and can be re-negotiated even within the terms of the initial contract. Re-negotiation is not always favorable for everyone involved. However if a product has a very high market demand, negotiations between the producer and the supplier can usually benefit both parties.

Ultimately, the market demand (viewers and advertisers) for a product (SEC Football) dictate the value of the product. However, the supplier (CBS) of a product (SEC football) has the ability to unilaterally manipulate the value of that product only as long as there are no other suppliers (ESPN, Versus, NBC, ABC) for that product who would choose to competitively offer the product.

When a product has a very high market demand, the producer (SEC schools) not the supplier (CBS) of the product dictate the value. When there are multiple producers the ability to dictate the value of the product is dependent on the collaboration of the producers in setting the value and ensuring continued quality of the product in comparison to similar products on the market.

SEC football is in high demand on the market and shows no indication of that changing. There is plenty of money to be made and passed around. A solution that is acceptable by all producers (schools) and suppliers (CBS, ESPN, etc.) is certainly achievable.

To those that say "It can't be fixed, just live with it" you are short sighted and ignorant.

To those that believe it can be changed easily and overnight you too are short sighted and ignorant.
