The worst thing the LSU Ath Dept has ever done...

is this nonsense with paid parking on campus. Now before some rantard tells me to do a search for threads, I've seen this one: LINK, but I wanted to put out a different slant on this.
I was at LSU as a student during the dark years of Archer and Hallman. During those Hallman years especially we tailgated for sure, but you could drive on campus at 4:00 pm before an SEC game and pretty much be guaranteed of a spot near the quad. Often times there were even spots available near Lockett! During this time we would always tailgate in Coates. Then comes DiNardo and a few wins, then Satan, I mean Saban and its game on. By the time we won the MNC in 2003 you needed to be on campus AT LEAST 24 hours in advance for a prime spot and it was awesome. We had a gameday experience that was the envy of anyone in the nation.
Until last Saturday.
I don't know which short sighted, LSU spirit hating money grubbing bureaucrat thought it was a good idea to charge $40)!!!!!) per vehicle PLUS $50 (!?!?!?!) per trailer to get to non-prime spots on campus, but whoever it was has killed the spirit of LSU tailgaiting in one shot - end of story. Whoever it was has killed an experience we've been building for 20 years.
I parked at a friend's house in Univ Hills and walked to the Budweiser tailgate near the Indian Mounds and, yes, the Indian Mounds was packed with people - but there were empty parking spaces. What was truly sad were the scores of empty spots and lack of tailgating at Dairy Center and the Union. Dozens of empty spots in South Coates, Empty spots in Lockett, etc. And don't give me this nonsense about Teal season or a weak opponent - this is LSU - we fill up our campus on Gameday regardless of WHO we play.
So, I really hope the powers that be reconsider this truly egregious error of judgment before things get worse because $40 is a raping and an unjust addition of the already inordinately rising costs of attending an LSU home game. I'll gladly pay my money for tickets and TAF (and any cost), but this disproportionate parking fee is one step over the line and is the first step towards killing the spirit of the fan base that keeps this whole thing going. I hope someone figures this out.

The thing is, they are actually losing money this way.
Charge 5, 10, 15, even 20 dollars for parking in those lots and they would be full.
But 40? You'll have empty lots.
Now do the math, if lots are nearly empty at 40$, say 20% (I'm being generous) full, that's 40x.2=8 times however many lots there are
Now, at 10$, those lots would be full.
So, 10x1=1, times the lots.
That's profit they are missing out on.
Even at 20$ those lots are at least 80% full.
20x .8 is 16!!!
Obviously no one with a math background is doing any thinking about this
ETA: sorry for the typo

While I refuse to pay for parking and tailgate in the free lot by Ceba, I understand that LSU is only doing what every other big school has been doing for years. Parking passes sell out every year at LSU. So instead of designating other areas for prepaid annual parking pass lots only, they decided to let anyone park there and pay each week. What it did was allow people who would rather wait until 5-6 to get out there a place to park on campus. If it was a big game, the spots would have been filled. But for NWS, you're not gonna have the turnout for tailgating. I walked all over campus Saturday and while there may have been fewer cars, there were still the same number of tailgated and people.

I disagree. I think it weeds out the fair-weather fans - the same fans that leave trash all over campus because they have no real ties to LSU.
I pitched in for my tailgate crew to be able to afford the fees. LSU alum 2000.

Holy shite....they charge $40 to park? I don't think Jerry even charges that. When they announced this I was thinking it would be like $10.

Despite all the hand-wringing over the parking prices, LSU won't know it's true effect until we get a top-ranked opponent in here. THEN, if the lots aren't full, it might serve as a wake-up call but even then I doubt it. I'm guessing we're stuck with these parking regs at least the rest of the year if not longer.

Looks like i'll be loading up the RADIO FLYER with all my tailgating needs to avoid that crap. You should see this thing with plasmas hanging off the sides!

$40 is too much. I think $20 is reasonable.

Obviously, LSU has priced the parking spaces incorrectly. At $40 the demand is less than the supply. At $0, free parking, the demand exceeds the supply. The answer to maximizing revenue is somewhere in between. How much are you willing to pay?

Agree with the original poster.
This plan has killed tailgating on the interior of campus. There have been three games per year the entire campus was packed: the first game, the first SEC game, and the marquis SEC game (Auburn, Fla, Bama). This year the first game was a ghost town. At 5pm there were twice as many empty spots in our lot as there were cars, and four of the cars were Facility Services vans.

The answer as to why they do it is simple math.
$40X20,000*=$800,000 X 6 home games= $5,400,000.00
*20,000 cars just my guess
$40X20,000*=$800,000 X 6 home games= $5,400,000.00

we park and tailgate on the corner of highland and stadium right alongside the building. Our lot is normally full by noon. this game it was less than 20% full, and we had 4 cars parked in it. I walked through campus at about 11 to pick up my tickets at the ticket office and it was very quiet on the way to the stadium. sure there were people out, but all the parking lots werent bumping like they normally were.

The NFL has long ago abandoned the fan and rendered them little more than an unappreciated source of revenue. Now it looks as it the officials at LSU have taken the same myopic view of the school's supporters.

This is a business boys. Get your 4 friends together and each put up the $10 it will take to park. Pound 4 more beers at the tailgate after the game so you don't have to drink so much at Walk Ons afterwards.
4 People X 2 Drinks each instead of 4= 8 drinks
8 drinks X $5 each (with tip) = $40
BOOM THERE YOU GO!

My group parks in Ceba (which is pre-paid passes only) and there were quite a few open spots. And these are people who pay every year to park there, so I'm gonna assume that a lot of the empty parking had to do with people just not going to the game.
As far as the paid parking in other areas, LSU should offer a season pass at a discounted rate (maybe $25 per game with an additional trailer pass for 25 more) and then have the $40 gameday pass available to people. It would eliminate some of the confusion and cluster-frick of everyone going to pick up their passes and give a discount option for the long-term crews.
