Well...

they are going through with it. gonna be some pissed off trainers (and owners) tonight.

quote:

“There have been questions in many quarters about the integrity of the breed when so many of our horses race on medication,” Dr. J. David Richardson, chairman of the AGSC, said after the organization met Aug. 10 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. “We view this as a positive step for the elite-level horses that will race in graded stakes, the ones most likely to perpetuate the breed.

i hate to say it, but i agree with him. and breeding bleeders to bleeders may one day form super bleeders that can bleed thorugh the drugs anyway.

the problem we have is that EVERY horse runs on lasix, so it's hard to tell if the horse you are breeding to is a bleeder or not.

Gonna be a shitty couple of years while the breeding catches up, though

lasix is a diruetic, what does that have to do with bleeding in horses?

lasix=salix?

why are you putting horses on Lasix? To decrease their blood pressure with excessive urination?

it lowers the blood pressure. when i say bleeding, i mean the horses bleeding from their lungs out their nose due to exertion.

quote:

The medication Furosemide, sold under the trade name, "Lasix", is a powerful diuretic that causes fluids locked up in the horse's body tissues to be released and expelled in the urine. This has the effect of lowering the horse's blood pressure, particularly in the aorta and pulmonary artery. The lower blood pressure in the capillaries mitigates the problem of EIPH; thus, the horse's performance returns to a normal level. Lasix is treatment of choice for EIPH, though study results of its effectiveness vary.

EIPH, or bleeding, was found in 2 studies this summer to be a problem that can be passed down through breeding.

arguments against lasix are that the us and canada are the only places where it is allowed, and that the side effect of peeing so much can help mask other illegal drugs in the system.

arguments for lasix are that horses who tend to bleed can't run without it, and once a horse starts using it, they don't run the same once they come off the lasix.
