Tuscaloosa Marine Shale

Been seeing lots of chatter about the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale running through Central Louisiana and the potential affect on the State's economy, especially with the advent of the relatively new Horizontal Fracking technology. Even without being proved out with test wells, some are already drawing parallels to the recent Haynesville bonanza and the Bakken Oil Shale in North Dakota. A study done by the LSU Basin Research Institute notes the potential for a 7 Billion (with a "B") barrel reserve in the TMS.
Anything to this or is this just hype from Jed Clampett wanna bees?

Wasn't TMS discovered years ago?
I believe there is an office in Clinton, LA with a TMS sign

Got some family that lives in south MS, about 10 15 miles from the LA/MS state line. They are getting ready to start some drilling on land we got down there.
Anyone in the Pike County area hit anything?

Newer Plays
Devon Energy has been leasing acreage in a number of emerging shale and unconventional resource plays over the last few years and has more than one million acres. These resource plays include the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, Niobrara Shale, Mississippi Lime, and the Utica Shale in Ohio and Michigan. Devon Energy plans to start testing some of these areas and will drill at least 30 exploratory wells to these formations in 2011. LINK

RE: Lineaments & TMS Locations
On the subject of TMS Maps and how accurate they are in helping to determine the likelihood of activity on your landholdings, this guy seems to stay on top of things, IMHO. Most notable: "After many wells are drilled, this will be a map to revisit." I think it implies that these maps are dynamic and subject to change, especially in light of the new "sideways" drilling and all the new interest being generated in the post-Haynesville TMS.
I just wish I knew a little more about what goes in to the decision making process about where to locate a well...

Enter the Chinese: WSJ Article; 01/03/2012
By TESS STYNES
Devon Energy Corp. reached a deal with Sinopec International Petroleum Exploration & Production Corp. in which the Chinese oil major will pay $2.2 billion for a one-third interest in five alternative shale plays.
The oil and gas explorer's shares were up 4.3% at $64.67 in early trading.
The deal is another sign of foreign companies' growing appetite for U.S. oil-and-gas assets. It comes on the heels of French oil giant Total SA's purchase of a minority stake in a swath of Chesapeake Energy Corp.'s Ohio shale discovery for $2.32 billion.
"This arrangement improves Devon's capital efficiency by recovering our land and drilling costs to date and by significantly reducing our future capital commitments," said Devon President and Chief Executive John Richels.
Under the deal, expected to close in the current quarter, Devon will serve as the operator. Sinopec will pay Devon $900 million at closing and $1.6 billion paid in the form of a drilling carry, which is expected to be realized by the end of 2014. The deal includes positions across five shale regions: the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, the Niobrara, the Mississippian, Ohio Utica Shale and the Michigan Basin.
The drilling carry is expected to fund 70% of Devon's capital requirements, which will result in Sinopec paying 80% of the overall development cost. The companies expect to drill 125 gross wells by the year's end across the five areas.
Devon in November reported third-quarter earnings fell 50% from a year-earlier period that included a $1.5 billion divestiture gain, as its hedging losses continued to mask its revenue growth.

The formation is certainly there. The challenges are rig availability and drill pipe availability. The steelmills are running at max capacity and still have a 6-9 month backlog. Most of the drill pipe and rigs are in North Dakota & Pennsylvania. Also the industry is in the "Great Crewchange"- 30-40% of the workforce, I can't see it taking off like the stuff in Shreveport, Dallas, ND, or Pennsylvania. Ohio's Utica is next in line.
