Not sure if we have a lot of green thumbs on this board, but I want to completely re-do my garden in front of my house. It's pretty small and just lines the front. Right now I have some small bushes surrounded by mulch.

I'd like to do some interesting stone work around the mulch, or take the mulch out completely. Anyone have any off the wall ideas or pictures?

It's a small space so I want to make it different and stand out a bit.

TIA

Varied plant height works really well for small areas. Large rock borders are cool, but can be a pain in the arse to keep grass out of. I just let grass grow between mine, and it looks like green mortar...kinda cool. Elevated planters (think sugar kettle) with spilling plants are also neat.

I love ornamental grasses. I just like the natural look of them, and you don't have to trim them, which is a huge plus in my mind. (I have hedges right now, and I cannot wait to pull those bastards out of the ground.)

You can mix many different textures, heights, and colors, which could make for a very interesting garden.

How big of an area? You can always put some type of waterfall fountain or little pond with exotic fish. Or put a goat in the garden and hope bayoudude's neighbors don't show up.

My grandma had an old toilet bowl in hers, but she was mentally ill later in life...

The flower beds I used to work would have a layer of mulch under a layer of pine straw with no borders to speak of, save the house and walkways. Broken flower pots look good, imo.

Find some nice neighborhoods and see what you like, take some pics then the local garden center can help you find what you need. Local nurseries would be best.
