This. And I think Bailey's was 2nd in BR, renovating an old Fast Track Burger joint; which Cane's did all through BR as well.

Graves was smart and put his 1st store right off campus.

Where all is Canes located? When I would read people on here talking about Cane's I always assumed it was something similar to Guthrie's.

I don't know when Guthrie's first opened, but I know it has been at least 20 years that I know and they have quite a few locations in areas further east that LA, esp in college towns.

Although the one in Florence, AL went out of business while the Zaxbys thrives. But the original Guthries was in Haleyville, AL, (at least that's what I have always heard) and their menu consisted of:

Chicken finger sandwich
Chicken finger plate (fingers and fries)
extra sauce
Soft drinks & sweet tea

The others have added a few things like slaw, but that's about it.

Similar to Dreamland BBQ (the original one) in the limited menu. Which I think is smart. There's no way a place can cook 50 different things well. Find 1 or 2 things you do better than anyone else and roll with it.

Apparently Guthrie's has been slinging chicken since 1978, and the original location was Haleyville, and I've eaten there many times. I can assure you the Guthrie family is not "butt hurt" about anything. They've made millions and millions slinging chicken and doubt they care about anyone else at this point.

ETA: I don't eat there though because the cheap bastards want to charge you for extra sauce. Maybe I'm just as stingy, but seems to me that you could be afforded one extra sauce without being charged for it. It's not like I'm going up there asking for half a dozen.

My BIL was there recently and a valet saw they were from Louisiana and said:

And they always had college kids running the place that would give their friends bags of chicken tenders and fries... might be partially why they didn't make it in the end. RIP, loved all those free meals.

funny thing that Todd Graves derived his idea from Guthrie's. Thats a fact. Guthrie's has been opened before Raising Canes. I believe one of the first ones was opened in Tallahassee. we have a few up here in Hoover and Vestavia Hills

Graves ran the one in Athens, I believe. Someone said that it started in Alabama but one of the first ones was the Athens one. The guys that ran Guthries were so terrible in terms of business acumen that they failed to take the concept far enough.

Graves was smart enough to see the good idea, and make it what it is today. Graves is the smart one in all of this and the Guthrie's people are the dumbasses.
