Is it ok to use 5w20 oil instead of 5w30?

Just wondering. One of my cars uses 6 quarts of 5w20 and the other uses 4 quarts of 5w30.

I'd like to just buy two 5 quarts jugs of 5w20, instead of buying an extra quart of 5w20 and not using a quart of 5w30.

TIA.

Shouldn't hurt. I think the 2nd number is just the viscosity of the oil.

Unless the warranty depends on the oil. I have a lifetime engine and power train and was told use manufacturers specs.

The one that suggests 5w30 is out of warranty already.

The only concern I would have is that I would assume you are making the oil change now, right? In the heat of the summer....The 20W oil would be better in cooler climates or in the winter down here. Personally, down here, I'd go with 30W in both of them.

The 5W20 should be fine for both vehicles, it's more important to worry about the quality of the formula. Maybe go with either a synthetic blend or a full synthetic to give the best wear protection

disregarding warranties

I would do the 5w30 on both cars in the summer, and the 5w20 on both in the winter

He is talking about the ambient temperature's influence on the viscosity.

It shouldn't matter, it will get pretty hot soon enough regardless from the engine temperature.

This....And being that we don't have extreme temps in the winter, 30W is fine then also. The 20W oil is preferred in climates where temperatures drop very low. Cold oil is more viscous/thick so at start up it makes the engine work harder.
