I always wanted to buy a gun for home defense. Now that I am of age what is the process to buy a assault rifle? Do I need a permit/ go through a course?
Also what about handguns?

People like this is why civilians should not be allowed to own assault weapons.

To start shooting a .22 is a great and cheap gun to start with. Ammo is cheap and you can shoot for hours on $20...
After you have become more comfortable with guns and have more experience, you will then have a better idea if the types of guns you want to buy. Remember any gun can and will kill, firearm safety is what you need to learn before you get and use a gun.

Harsh crowd on the OB this morning. I understand the gist but a guy has to start somewhere, no?
Plus, he'll be another gun owner which means one less potential anti-gun person.

Anyone over 18 that can pass the background check can walk out of any gun shop with a brand new AR-15 in less than an hour. No training required. Hell I have been quite scared around some that have had training provided by uncle sam If you want it buy it. It isn't rocket science and the safety is written in English. If you want something ultra simple get an AK hell even little African kids can use them.

A shotgun and a hacksaw would be much better for home defense as compared to an AR

Yes I want a AR for the tactical look. I don't see a problem with that. In my opinion it is the same reason why people mod up their guns to make them look cool and also for the slight improvements. I know how to handle a gun safely. My parents don't own guns so I never learned how to fire a weapon or owned my own gun
