Some of my favorites:
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
Saving Private Ryan
Deer Hunter
We Were Soldiers
Enemy At The Gates
Bridge Over the River Kwai
Hell in The Pacific
The Dirty Dozen
Watching Saving Private Ryan now and the first 20-30 minutes is pretty intense. Probably the most brutal and violent of any war movie.

1. Come and See
2. The Thin Red Line
the rest...meh
all other war movies are glorified hero worshiping, everythings-gonna-be-okay! moral victory circlejerk fests.
at least the two above have the balls to show the horror and complex psychology involved.

Not the GOAT but something different and definitely worth a watch.... Of you're into that 80's movie sort of thing.

Although it's a mini-series and not movie, my vote goes to Band of Brothers.
If I had to choose a movie, I'd say Saving Private Ryan.

Got to go with Kubrick.
No other movie depicts as accurately the role fear and ego play in creating the conditions for war.
Patton is a close second. And while I appreciate the significance of Apocalypse Now, I can't honestly say I enjoy it.
