from DOTD:

"DOTD is closing the LA 190 bridge for inspections after it was struck by at least one barge a short while ago. MOHSEP says four grain barges are taking on water after coming loose from a tug in the river."

UPDATE: EBRSO has just reported the LA 190 bridge is back open in all directions after inspections determined a barge hitting it did no damage.

Yep, I would hear of the call, boats would come up to knock barges back into the center of the river, shielding the docks, other barges, casinos, etc. Any barges taking on water, were run aground to keep from sinking in the river.

I remember one time a small tow (2 barges) hit a docked crude ship....
Then a ship loaded with Jet fuel lost all power....
Kind of miss those days.....

Email from earlier:
LMR Closed to Vessel Traffic from River MM 232 to Mile 237

Fellow FSO Workgroup Members (MSOC Port of South Louisiana),

The Mississippi River has been closed from Mile 232 to Mile 237 due to an allision involving two barge tows. One tow was transporting sulfuric acid, and the other was transporting grain. VTS is reporting that three barges carrying grain sank, but the barge containing sulfuric acid is not leaking at this time.

I've spent nearly all 27 around the river in one way or another.
