Also, ACOE has stated that the river would crest over the locks, so water was coming down that way regardless.

Which is why I am a little frustrated with the pussy footing about opening the Morganza. They know what will happen if they don't so why put that much more strain on the levees. Start relieving it now!

It probably has more to do with giving people downstream of the spillway time to get their stuff to higher ground as well as the legal hurdles involved in getting them opened than any pussy-footing.

I thought I read somewhere that once the flow rate reaches a certain threshold they will open it?????

The "possible" opening date keeps getting pushed further and further back, yet everyone seems to agree that there is no doubt that it must be opened.

I'm certainly no engineer and do not pretend to be one, but I'd hate to see bureaucratic delay allow a somewhat preventable disaster (or at least one that can be mitigated) to occur. It feels like the government is standing in the middle of the road watching a speeding car come at them, but yet trying to wait until the last possible second to jump out of the way.

IMO they are going to announce tomorrow (Thursday) that they are going to open the Morganza either Sunday or Monday morning.....this gives the people at least 3 or 4 days official notice to get their shite out over the weekend....honestly I think thats the best way for them to do this.

Giving folks every second to prepare.

It isn't pussy footing.

The water flow hasn't even reached the level to warrent opening it per the plan.

What I heard from Scott Angelle (Sec of DNR) yesterday in a meeting was that if they let the area behind the spillway fill up too soon, it won't take the crest as readily (backpressure?), so they are kind of saving the opening. They also learned their lesson from 1973 when they threw everything open and it caused scouring and almost kept them from closing it, so the gates will be opened VERY slowly, possible taking up to 72 hours, so the flow's impact on the area right around the structure is lessened.
