They'll make money off people who do come to tailgate.

I do not see how LSU makes money from people tailgating – especially those that do not have tickets for the game. We have a reserved spot across from the south end zone. If we arrive 4 hours or 10 minutes before the game, or do not make the game, LSU has the fees that we already paid for that game. The only “cost” to LSU is if we liter while tailgating.
Also:
1. I have yet to see anyone tailgating walk over to the stadium to buy drinks. A major part of tailgating is having everything you need when you set up.
2. People who want to buy t-shirts, etc. usually do so before they enter the stadium.
3. LSU has a tremendous expense cleaning up after the tailgaters. Joe Aleva addressed this in his letter regarding the parking fees.

At $40 a car and $50 a trailer, they most certainly will make money...

The garbage contract this past season was less than previous years. However, after games like WVU they had to hire additional help from all over. This is what added the expense.

I have talked with LSU regarding the parking issue on a few occasions. There is the trash issue, yes, but also destruction on campus. After the WVU game it cost LSU facility services 1,300 to replace the cemented brown wooden posts along Nicholson that were pulled out by tailgaters. There was damage to Turead hall bathroom and various other places on campus.

Crews had to walk every inch of grass on the parade grounds to pickup broken glass.
