Anyone ever done it? Is it legal? We are thinking about doing this the first weekend in June. Any suggestions? I'm sure that we can catch some fish and maybe even gig some flounder. Thanks

We used to near whiskey pass when I was a kid. I think the Island is a bird sanctuary or some shite now but I doubt anyone would tell you anything. If you go let us know the condition of the beach. I haven't been to last island in about four or five years. We used to go into California canal and tie up at the statue and go walk the beach and take a lunch break. You can always find some cool shite on last island. My crown jewel is a dolphin skull

Was in Dulac this past weekend and some buddies and I were also talking about doing it soon. Have pulled up to the shores and spent a few hours out there. Lots of signs of people being out there. Buddy said wake up in the AM and throw topwater and it's money. Will be doing it soon.

Just be warned they have some of the meanest maringouins you have ever seen out there. If there isn't any wind it will be miserable when the sun goes down. Good thing is that there is no shortage of drift wood so you should be able to build an epic fire.

I've spent a few hours at a time on the island in the past, just never stayed over night. You're right, there is all kinds of stuff up there. Here in the office I have a giant sea turtle skull that we found.

The fishing on the beach has been incredible the past few years and I'm dying to be out there at first light with a topwater bait in hand.

It has been a couple of years since we have done it, but it was always a blast. We would get all the wood we could find and burn it all.

We acually made it out there last weeked to fish. Fished the backside and caught 45 trout. The action slowed, so I took my 4 year old walking on the beach. We pulled up on the eastern end of Whiskey Pass. After a short walk the finally tally was 1 coconut, about 50 Hermit crabs and an assload of shells that I made him throw back.

We used to bring buckets of the small shells home and use them instead of gravel in the bottom of a fish tank. Many good memories on last island. It is a shame that there aren't any land camps left out there. Hard to imagine that there were fresh water ponds there too. When my dad was a kid people used to have jeeps and 3 wheelers out there to get from their camps to the beach since they had so much land out there.

I almost forgot, The canal w/ the virgin mary statue is silted in. The gulf is maybe 75 yards from the it now.

Damn that is crazy! The canal used to go on for a while past the statue then hook back towards it on the back side and you had camps on both sides of the canal plus some on the beach side.

Yeah, I was thinking that we would anchor the boats on the western end near Whiskey Pass. That cove is fairly protected and 3-4 feet deep right up to the island.

If you ever get a chance, there are two books about Last island from back in its heyday that you should check out. Great read and will blow you away regarding the island and what it once looked like.

Do any of you know if the Ship Shoal light house is still there?

I didn't make it to the western side, but the eastern side barely has anything left. I sticks out a couple of hundred yards and may be 50 - 100 feet wide. I remeber only a couple of years ago it being 300 yards wide there. The beach was really dirty with shells, also we found a dead porpise. You can still pull up pretty close to the beach.

Not true. I was in it two weeks ago. If you approach from the east side and stay in the pipe markers, the channel is clear. My 19ft with a decent V hull made it fine. I got run off because they are running oil spill operations out there. There were at least five boats on the sand bank at the end of the channel. They may be finished by now, but keep in mind that the island is posted by an oil company, so you might be trespassing. Regardless, who is there to enforce anyway?

I am always amazed that the statue has remained on that piling.

There used to be a canal that ran right along side the statue. There was a dock and a small shelter there. Years ago the Whiskey pass Fishing rodeo was held there. I've stayed at house boats parked 20 feet from the statue.

It was still there in the summer of 2002. I havent been out there since. Wasn't that thing considered haunted because the people that worked up there kept dying? IIRC, it turned out to be a poisonous paint that was killing them.

yeah that thing is creepy as shite. the fresh water tanks were coated with lead paint and the tenders went mad...

On another note a man I know (dead now) found bails of weed on last island in the 80's. They made a fire
