NY vs Louisiana football recruiting, question is answered by ESPNU

yesterday a poster wondered why New York with its large population, is not able to produce football players like Louisiana does. I just put on ESPNU to get ready to record the OVC semifinals basketball game coming on and there was a lacrosse game in progress featuring Syracuse. The analyst told a story about how Syracuse coach encourages CREATIVITY. That's nuance. They play nuanced lacrosse. Syracuse is a city in northern NY. It happens also that immediately north of Syracuse is a enormous Iroquois reservation. the Iroquois were interested in lacrosse when Euros first arrived, and it is still played as a serious warrior game by them. So... Syracuse is a power in lacrosse as interest in the game started there.
Just another edge to the NY football question.
They play football. But they also play lacrosse, hockey, and baseball and basketball and they are more into basketball and baseball in NYC and Long Island than they are further north, where lacrosse and hockey are stronger although lacrosse has become a yuppie game on Long Island because its a possible ticket to acceptance at a premier east coast college.
b]They are into other things in NY.[/b] that's the simple answer.
Peace. Out. o.

Lacrosse has nothing to do with the lack of big time players out of NY.
It is about genetics and opportunity to play.

A simple response, "They don't play football as much and they're not as serious about it," would have covered it for you

I'm from the Syracuse area, Otto.
Every word you said was brilliant.
You are a master, possibly the greatest in board history.
Of any board, anywhere.
Zurich-trained-scientists in combination with publishing houses should catalogue your posts for future generations.
I can offer nothing more than a salute.
Your brilliance is undeniable, your 188 IQ confirmed.

Another reason is that the best football players in New York(not all but most) are moved to New Jersey for football.Go take a look at NJ history of top high school talent.New York's inner city kids play basketball.Same as most major city kids in the country.Basketball is the easiest and cheapest for inner city kids to play.

I disagree with this guys analysis. People in Louisiana have just as many ways to pass time as NY. So they play Lacrosse and hockey. Louisiana has more to offer fishing, hunting, water sports, etc. All of which can prevent kids from playing football. Hate to pull the race card, but the South has more African Americans which statistically are more athletic. Therefore the south especially LA will produce better football players. If football wasn't king in the South and Lacrosse and hockey were, Louisiana would produce more athletes then NY...IMO

Here is an otherwise unknown and useless fact that contributes absolutely nothing to this conversation, but that won't stop me. Jim Brown of Syracuse and Cleveland Browns fame is in the lacrosse hall of fame at Hopkins in Baltimore.

They hunt and fish in NY too.
there are camps throughout where people have fishing lodges, hunting lodges, and ponds and lakes for water sports.

There are more african americans in New York City than in the entire state of Louisiana. The reason is the weather, lack available space and overall lack of interest. There is mostly no support for college football and no recent football success collegiality in NYC like in Louisiana to drive the best athletes to play football. Kids can basically play outside year round here so there are more athletes per capita in most southern states. The density in New York also plays into it. The lack of large grassy areas as well the cost of equipment prevent many economically challenged kids from growing up playing football. Most of these kids end up gravitating to basketball because of the abundance of courts and the relative low equipment costs to play.
