quote:I feel the same. I want to find a decent outfitter in the mid west and harvest a nice deer there. Or.... I can hopefully convince my buddy who lives in Montana and has a shite ton of family land to let me come up there and take a nice whitetail or mule deer. I just have to get all the cold weather gear.
South Texas hunting like this is just not hunting to me

I agree with 'neck and 'baitin...
That is NOT hunting. That's for the well off corporate execs from NY and Chicago who get a wild hair up their arse to kill a dear and are willing to shell out the $$$ for a fabricated experience of hunting. Yeah those ranch owners may make a lot of $$$ but it's still not hunting.
There's a satisfaction that comes with finding a great place, setting up a stand or two, placing feeders and trail cams, tracking a couple of big bucks for a couple years and finally taking one down on that cold morning when u see it peek its head out in the open for the first time.

I will agree that you can't be some guy who pays the money to go to a place like this to be spoon fed a deer that you know he will get something and has never spent the time doing all you said. Setting up feeders, game cams, working the land. You can't be called a hunter without that.
I've done that on my old property in MS and it is very rewarding. I'm seeing it on this place too. I wouldn't tell these guys running this place that they don't hunt. They still do all the same work.
Lets be sure not to confuse the guys who run and set these places up with the people who just go out for the experience.
I agree with you 76!

I've done a lot of La and south Texas and while harvesting a deer is no big deal in Texas, killing a big one is. None of the places we leased in Tx were game fenced but we tried to manage them and on the one in Junction we had more 8 pts than you could shake a stick at. But once they got over 3 years old, poof... you'll never see them again in daylight without seriously hunting your arse off.
Those who say South Texas hunting isn't hunting don't know what they're talking about or are just jealous. It's just different.
Paying for a trophy like that though... nah. Wouldn't mean anything to me then.

Yep I found out the same thing hunting out there. Our place was too small and got over pressured. The only time you would see a shooter was during the rut or rattling. I never killed anything big out there because everything I saw was broke up and I saw some big ones.
I saw a 190-200 class buck on the side of the highway in Menard. It was amazing to see something that big. Thinking back I should have turned around and shot that SOB!

pretty much raising deer to shoot isnt hunting no matter how you put it
next time i catch a rat red i will raise it in a tub so i can take a pic when it gets huge amd claim i caught it

not real hunting at all. Like going to the market and picking out your meat is all.
