I like Silver Oak. It's a good, recognizable red that makes a great gift. Yes, there are a ton of small winery jewels out there. But sounded to me like the OP wanted something easily available in BR.

OP, go visit with Charlie at Calandros on Government, or go to Martins. They can point you in the right direction.

I hear ya, Grits. Sorry if that sounded a little gruff--wasn't meant to be!

At that price point, he'll be getting the Alexander Valley Silver Oak; IMO, in that range, he can make a much bigger splash going with something else.

When I give wine as a gift, I try to introduce the recipient into a wine they might not normally encounter.

Damn, I sound like a chick. Nevermind.

I totally understand what you're saying. Sometimes you have to give someone a bottle of wine that they would like, but that you wouldn't drink yourself. I don't like Silver Oak, in fact i think it's a horrid, mass produced, over manipulated mess of a wine. But if someone else likes it, I'd be happy to give them a bottle as a gift and hope they drink all they can.
