when I have used photobucket I have never never noticed an option to use "drag and drop". When I do it I click the "select photos and videos" button, find the file on the computer then double click the image and it pops in there.

I just signed up for a photobucket account because I thought there was a drag and drop feature.

An awesome idea would be for them to create a desktop icon that you could drag your pictures in and automatically up-load them. Now that would be handy.

I usually do that double click thing, but sometimes I will go split screen like from My Pictures or My Docs and just click on what I want to put in Photobucket and drag it to the file name line and hit the open button. May not be the right way but it's been working for me.

If it works, it's right.

Is Photoshop any easier to use? If so I'll go buy it. I've heard it's a bit expensive...but I can do without some beer and ribs for a while.hehe
Thanks guys for this thread.

Photoshop is VERY expensive. If Gimp is giving you fits, try Paint.net before investing that kind of money. I'd hate to see you give up beer and ribs for a tool that you may or may not use.

I exclusively use Paint.net and think it is fairly intuitive.

So, in conclusion, download Paint.net and enjoy your beer and ribs.

Looks good! I know you went through several fits to get it done, but it will be easy the next time...and the time after that... Keep em coming!

Thanks Catahula for the nudge to start. Sometime after the holidays I'll start working on changing faces and logo's and team colors and all. Rem, the kinda stuff I used to pester you all about doing for me. WOW!!! I never thought all that would someday be at my fingertips!!!!
Thanks again!

re: Teach a man to Fish (Fark Board Beginner Questions)

OK, I admit it I'm hooked big time. I did this last night stayed up until 1 a.m. changing the colors. I'm using Paintnet. Got a couple of questions:
1. as I was painting with the brush I seem to have some jagged edges around his shirt sleeve, and I couldn't get the line on his shoulder to work, so I left it out, is there something I can use to smooth out the look?
2. I want to put the VT logo on his hat...I'm guessing I need to use another layer for that, but since I have yet to try the layering thingy I don't want to mess this up!!

I was going to give some advice in your banhammer thread yesterday but I decided I would let you try and figure some things out on your own.

Using paint.net, do you see the eye-drop shaped tool? That selects colors. So I would grab your red on the hat and use the Paint brush tool to make it all one color. Carefully. Zoom in and take your time. You will learn how to work quickly with practice but for now, take the time and do it slowly but correctly.

To fix his shoulder, take that eye-drop again and choose the orange. Zoom on that section. Use the line tool. Draw an orange line along that black. After you draw the straight line, it will have 4 dots. You can drag these to curve the line to match that edge. These curved lines are how I edit much of my vectors. Now you know why each image takes so long.

As I've said before, Paint.net is my program of choice. If there is something specific about the tools, ask.

Thanks, Tim.
I really want the VT logo on his hat. Am I right in thinking I have to layer it on? and how to use the layers...I'm not understanding how to use layers.

re: Teach a man to Fish (Fark Board Beginner Questions)

You don't have to use layers but that is going to be the easiest way.

Pay close attention because this sounds difficult. It isn't though, it's just a little hard to explain.

Find a suitable Logo
Go to Google and find a VT logo. Google image search for "Virginia tech logo." You will get a lot of choices. Pick one that has a white background. For instance, this one:

Paste in New Layer
Now right click on the image and copy. Go to your Mario image in Paint.net. "Choose Paste in New Layer." It will likely ask if you want to resize the canvas. Yes to fit the logo. You can resize later.

Now you have 2 layers which should be shown in your "layers tab." Make sure you are on the logo tab. Use the Magic Wand tool and click on the white area. It should highlight everything outside the logo. Click delete. This will delete the highlighted section. It should leave you with just the logo. (to make it look best, you want to apply a feather effect to clean the jagged edges).

Resize the logo.
Click on anywhere with the arrow selection tool. The whole layer should be selected. Now grab one of the corners with mouse, hold tab and move the mouse in to shrink the image. Tab makes sure it resizes without changing the aspect ratio (fancy way of saying without distorting the height vs width properties).

When the logo is the size you want, use the selection arrow again to move it on the hat.

Now, you have been working in the second layer. So your original mario layer should be unchanged. When you save the image in PNG or JPEG format, it will flatten your layers and you will no longer be able to edit them individually.

It sounds like a lot but this is pretty easy when you get the hang of all the tools. If I was unclear, please ask.

re: Teach a man to Fish (Fark Board Beginner Questions)

sounds good Tim, I have a tiny VT logo w/ white background in photobucket. I'll try this.
Hey, I really appreciate everyone's patience..I figure it may take me a while but I wanna learn this art the right way!!

re: Teach a man to Fish (Fark Board Beginner Questions)

ok, I'm stuck....I have the mario guy in the middle of the page but when I click on the vt logo, it replaces mario in the center of the screen. At the top right of the page I have both pics in the white area. What am I doing wrong? I used the magic wand I thought I could lift and place the logo to the hat!!
Didn't happen.

re: Teach a man to Fish (Fark Board Beginner Questions)

That is actually correct. What you have is 2 layers, one on top of the other just like a stack of papers.

One of the layers, the VT logo has a white background. So the white background covers the mario image. You need to get rid of the white background in the logo layer. That is what the magic wand does- it uses a algorithm to select a large area of pixels that are similar. Use the magic wand to select the white. You can delete it then.

Now you should be able to resize and move the logo. I know this stuff seems complicated. You will get the hang of it. I'll make a tutorial tomorrow if it is still confusing.

re: Teach a man to Fish (Fark Board Beginner Questions)

well, the vt logo is very tiny about the size of the one I just typed. I think when I saved the pic after coloring it last night/this morning at 1 actually, I
did something that won't let me add to that pic now.
Well, I'll look forward to your tutorial. I know you all have better things to do than baby sit me on this but man-o-man I appreciate the help!!!

re: Teach a man to Fish (Fark Board Beginner Questions)

well, I have the vt logo sized down and on mario's hat, but the image seems blurry and there are little white pixels around the vt logo??? I tried to save it but I guess I didn't do that right. I can't dump it into my photobucket to show you!! I'm still not understanding the layers stuff!!! Most of what I'm doing is trial and error...like feeling my way around in a dark room. hehe

re: Teach a man to Fish (Fark Board Beginner Questions)

this...

I wish it had turned out more clear and no white thingys on the vt logo...but this has been a real challenge for me. I really really wanted it first of all, and I wanted to get it kinda fast. We had a real meltdown on our payboard over loosing a couple of good recruits. Making these things is REAL HARD!!!! maybe not for you guys,,but for me very hard! Honestly I just thought it was a drag-n-drop effort that maybe took a while. NOT THE CASE!! I respect ALL you guys that do this even more than ever now. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
