The yells have been around since WW1. The fans have not.

Anyways, I think you're reading too much into the word "practice." It's not a serious practice, it's just a tradition...something fun to do. You run into other students, opposing fans, old alumni, see the coach and listen to him get ya all riled up.

To push a little more.

We as the 12 man have a role in the game just like the players do. We contribute through our "yells". Hence the "practice" aspect of it. We get together and practice each one to make sure everyone knows what to do.
