so if the cheers, oh wait yells, have been around since wwi why do you need to practice them? seems like everybody should know them by now.

The yells have been around since WW1. The fans have not.

Anyways, I think you're reading too much into the word "practice." It's not a serious practice, it's just a tradition...something fun to do. You run into other students, opposing fans, old alumni, see the coach and listen to him get ya all riled up.
