In what several sources around the Big East described as a pivotal meeting, Big East presidents and athletic directors will meet tomorrow in Philadelphia to discuss probable expansion plans, The Post has learned.

The regularly-scheduled meeting of the presidents and athletic directors figures to be intense as the BCS-football playing members of the league intend on pressing their agenda to add teams to the eight-team football conference.

"The goal is to get the presidents' blessing to seriously pursue teams," said one Big East athletic director. "I don't think we're going to get pushback on that."

Several sources confirmed a Post report last month that TCU is a strong candidate. Houston, Central Florida, Temple and/or Villanova, which is in the midst of evaluating a move up from FCS, are other lead candidates.

Two sources said if the presidents give their blessing to explore expansion, invitations could be issued before the end of the college football season. TCU is said to be very interested, as is Central Florida.

How would this work with travel?

Not sure raiding the MAC and C-USA is a good recipe for making your conference stronger. That's how they got into this mess to begin with.

The Big East could potentially add teams in Houston, DFW, Philly and Orlando to boast for its next TV contract negotiations. Of course, it's not as if those teams corner their respective markets, but the conference is essentially in survival mode, and those are the best options.

As for travel, you could split the football teams into North/South divisions. There would be three cross-divisional games each year. This is how one BE fan has it:

TCU, UH, Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida and UCF

Rutgers, Pitt, West Virginia, UConn, Villanova and Syracuse

Appy St. is making the move up to the FBS soon are they not? They've just expanded their stadium, and they always manage to sell it out. Perhaps they should be in this discussion?

TCU will probably happen because it makes financial sense for both the school and the Big East. TCU gets into a BCS conference, increases their revenue; Big East adds a quality school in sport and academics, gains access to the DFW market.

Still, the union is geographically retarded. A mid-Texas school in the Big East? The closest member would be Louisville, KY. You would have member schools in Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida...and Texas. That is one far-flung conference. However, money trumps everything else and in this case the money for both TCU and the Big East is very tempting.

I would not be surprised to see the Big East also add a school like Houston just so TCU is not stuck out west by itself. Another school like Houston helps to shore up that far branch and bridge the gap. Moreover, Houston is a good market and the school could form a nice rivalry with TCU.

Central Florida makes sense because it is already in the geographic realm of the conference. South Florida and Central Florida could build some enthusiasm and Orlando is also an attractive market. Central Florida, however, is not a quality football addition to the Big East in the manner of TCU or Houston.

Temple, while doing good now under Al Golden, struggled for years and was kicked out of the Big East just a few years ago. I seriously doubt they get back together.

Villanova thought about moving up to FBS just a few years ago and there was no real support in the school for such a move. I doubt they change their minds now.
