Salary Negotiations: How much should I ask for?

So next week I'm going for an in person interview.
The position is called a Health Communications and Project Consultant with a large (100-500 employee) non-profit organization. It is a mid-level position where I would be working with the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs doing communications work.
The job is based out of Alexandria, VA/DC.
I've done my research and this is the range that I'm looking at.
Salary Scale
What should I say my salary requirements are? I don't want to overshoot and scare them away. I do want to get a fair salary though because it's pretty expensive to live in this area.
TIA

Always a tough question to answer. Say too much and you might scare them away. Say too little and they may offer you that, and if you decline they are going to be like "WTF? Thats what you told us."
Definitely give them a range, starting with the minimum amount that you would move to VA for, and then make the high-end something reasonable, but doubt you would get offered. Then just mention how you'll really take everything into consideration (i.e. cost of living adjustment, other benefits, how much you may want this position, etc).

would you care to give any specific reason as to why you said this number?

Never say an exact number. Just say something like you've researched the salary range in your industry for the DC area, and you have the skills/expertise to warrant a competitive salary.

even when asked at the actual interview?
I'm pretty sure they'll ask the question again if I give them a vague answer like that.

Otherwise something along the line of "I've had offers ranging from ________ to _________. It's always a balance between the nature of the job, and its compensation . . . ."
(It is, BTW......Career growth potential, benefits, job stability, vacation, etc. are all part of that balance)
" . . . What would you typically offer for someone of my training and background?"

Ohhhh. Touche' NC.
I may try that.

If you're going to ask for something above average, be ready to explain why you are "above average".

also, that seems a bit high of a scale (like usual for sites like that)
Posted on 10/5/10 at 9:49 am to TortiousTiger
oh really? the scales are exaggerated that much?
I was hoping to get somewhere in the lower end of the scale. I can't really live in that area without a salary close to that range.
Plus, I would have to pay 2760 yearly to park at work. sucks.

I have found sites like that to overestimate avg salary.

It's called the street, park on it. $10.95 a day sounds overly expensive.

You know a bunch of idiots then. Anyone paying over $1000/yr to park in NOLA is a fool.
