Same reason I care what other people watch on television, how they raise their children, what they read (if they even do), where they vacation, how they spend their free time, etc.. Because it has impact on the world in which I live.

Sorry. I didn't realize that human beings striving to be better than their peers was a bad thing.

Guess you want a society where instead of trying to climb one's way up the social and economic ladders, people resign themselves to making sure they don't offend anyone with their intelligence, tastes or ambitions.
