Are you serious they won't give you a line of $500?

Just go online to one of the credit card companies(Citi or Chase). I find it hard to believe you can't get a card. We used to sign up for them in college with fake incomes, etc and could still get them.

This. Although I'm also puzzled about not qualifying for a $500 credit limit.

I can remember even 4 years ago standing in front of Mr. Gatti's at the Northgates signing up for credit card offers with fictious SS# just so that we could get free meals.

your problem might be the cards that you're applying for. Try student cards first, if you cant get one of those, get a gas card, which no one gets denied for, use it for a few months, then reapply for a student card. No ones looking to take financial risks in this environment, you're probly going to have to work your way up to a decent card.

had the same problem a few years ago. if you know someone that works at a local bank, they can get you a credit card. I am from a small town and the bank manager allowed me to have one. I agree that the system if fricked up. i hate the creditors for this. when i was trying to get a card, the people at the bank told me it is easier to get a credit card with bad credit than none. if all cc companies go broke, i would smile.

I agree. Go to a local bank and get a secured revolving account. Or if your parents are willing to make you an authorized user on one of their cards and they have really good credit that will help you out as well. As an authorized user that doesn't mean you would have a card, but its a great way to build credit. For mortgage purposes you'll need a minimum mid credit score of 620 and the Fair Credit Reporting Act allows everyone to get a free credit report once every 12 months, just go to www.annualcreditreport.com.

I had the same issue and we ended up getting an American Express in my name eventually. We have to pay a couple hundred bucks a year for the card, but we were given enough flyer miles when I opened the account to neglect the yearly card cost (at least for a year or so).

Create a CD and borrow against it.. Make the monthly payments and you'll start building credit history. After 6 months or so, you should qualify for a $500 credit card...
