I'm just starting out brewing my own beer. I have a carboy and noticed the instructions saying to pour the yeast in the fermenting vessel (in this case a carboy) wait 10 min. then stir.

So what is the best way to stir the mixture in the carboy?

The absolute best way I've seen is to get one of those collapsible paint stirrers that you hook up to a drill to aerate the wort.

I usually just set the carboy on a cushion of some sort and rock it back and forth several times.

BTW, if you don't have one of these, get one: LINK. Those glass carboys can get slippery and heavy, and I've heard more than a few horror stories about accidents with them.

If you are using dry yeast, rehydrate it by boiling 4 oz of water. Let water cool to 80 degrees. Add yeast and let sit for 10 min. stir and add to carboy w/ wort already in it. Shake the hell out of the carboy w/ cap off for a minute. Cap, add air lock. I use liquid yeast that comes in a pouch. You slap the pouch which breaks an internal seal and let the pouch sit for an hour. The pouch swells up and you open it and add to the carboy and wort.

BTW what size carboy. If not 6.5 then prepare to use a blowoff.

(sometimes you need it even with a 6.5)

Saw someone online use this method. glad to see you advise it as well. I'll definitely apply that bit of useful info.

I have been brewing for 5 years and have moved from boiling to simply using tap water out of ever-increasing laziness. No ill effects whatsoever.

If you are in BR, consider joining the Red Stick Brewmasters. Lots of good knowledge to be had.

At the moment there are only 6 guys involved so we go to either my house or my neighbors because we have the room to brew more than just one batch at a time. We are putting the finishing touches on an actual website this week that will allow us to hopefully grow some, so that it is worthwhile to go to a place to meet. We are not doing anything this week, (unless you want to come over and talk about our website finalization) but we should be doing something again next week/weekend. I know it sounds lame to say that we meet at one of our houses but that allows us to brew/drink/plan all at the same time.

Hey, as long as it gives you time to brew and drink, it doesn't sound lame. That's the important part. Good luck with it. I might come out at some point if I get some free time. Y'all usually on Saturdays or Sundays?

Its typically on Sat but if it is better for everyone on Sunday we are incredibly flexible. Once the website is up and running (we are meeting about it tomorrow) I will start "advertising" trying to get more people involved. We didn't think that the Red Stick guys talked about beer enough at their meetings, felt like it was just office politics and drinking but no learning about beer (IMO). Good guys just not what I was looking for.

Right on. You are probably right, but to be honest, most of the stuff I have learned has been from the relationships I've developed with other brewers and talking about it at times other than meetings. The meetings really are just about office politics and drinking. I have really learned a lot from other guys at other times and have also been able to share what I've learned. It is also a great way to have access to equipment and cheap bulk ingredients.

I bookmarked your page and will check back in a few weeks to see about the progress of your page. Happy brewing!

You too, hopefully you will not be disappointed with the web content. We are fairly ambitious with the website.

Right on. My name is Chris - not sure if you ever met me at a meeting. I am a bald guy with a beard. Often with a UGA hat.

We only went to 2 or 3 meetings, so I may have seen you. I tried to make myself heard but it was kind of difficult with the format of the meeting. My name is Blake, fyi. Look to catching up with you sometime in the future.
