It was my understanding that they were going to use casing guns to perforate the casing before pumping the kill mud, instead of trying to drill the casing with a mill.

That's not what Kent Wells has been saying. I think they plan to drill right into it while circulating heavy mud. The angle they're drilling at is pretty steep (nearly vertical) so it should cut a pretty big hole.
