It's my Dad's side that is a distant heritage towards Ireland and Italy so I'm not really close to either. My mother's entire family lives in Germany. I'm a first generation American on that side of the family.

It is just the reverse for me. The French/German on my mother's side has been in North America for a while. I'm 2nd generation American on the Sicilian/Italian side of the family. Always pull for the Italians when they are not playing the Americans. Loved seeing them win the last world cup.

Me, not so much...

To be fair though, a lot of it has to do with the Italians knocking the hosting Germans out of the World Cup.

I remember watching that game. It was great. Germany was playing for the tie and the Italians scored a goal at around the 88 minute mark. It was a dagger to the heart of Germany.

One of the best world cup games I've seen.

119th minute. And that goal was beautiful.

I could see that after about the 60th minute IIRC. I want to say we had just beaten Argentina(sp?) in PKs and it really looked like we were just playing for that.

Was so damned pissed.

Germans played very complacent. Didn't really attack. They just hung back and, as previously mentioned, were playing for PK's.

Wasn't so bad. Germany definitely loves attacking, and they got some shots. Buffon did have to work a little bit, IIRC.

We saw what happens when Italy actually plays to attack the goal. It's a shame they don't do it more. I can see why they'd be scared senseless of a shootout with Germany.

Was not a fan of Klinnsman as the German NT coach that year. Also didn't like him as the Bayern Munich coach in 08-09. Damn near the entire team consisted of national team players and he couldn't even win the Bundesliga.

I thought he did a fine job, to be honest. Was kind of hoping he took the USA job after.

Good to hear. I haven't been to Germany, but France and Italy/Sicily are by far my 2 favorite countries to visit in Europe. Italy has the best food by far...

So you're a fair weather fan? I can understand feeling stronger ties to another country than the US, if you legitimately have a strong connection to another country. I can't understand rooting for different countries in each sport. That's just being a bandwagon fan and the type of fan referred to in this thread.

Lot of great things about Italy. It's just a shame they'd rather flop and play defense for 90 minutes than actually play good soccer.

some here are too stupid to comprehend that 62zip. Most here are also too stupid to even realize what they are spewing. I pull for the USA and Italia. Just like I am sure you pull for greece and the USA. nothing wrong with that at all. Just seems that the Azurri have had much more success than the USA in the WC overall(hell, more success than any other country other than brasil). Ahh but now the azzurri gets knocked out(not happy about) and the USA advances(which i am thrilled about) and the tards try to make both teams mutually exclusive to fans of both countries. hypocrites and idiots here. funny when i was pulling for the azzurri and USA in the past we never heard a peep from these newbies like now on this board. it's really laughable. Most these so-called USA only fans probably did not even know what soccer was 4 or 8 years ago for obvious reasons.

It's really not a difficult concept, and apparently the smartasses weren't quite bright enough to grasp that I was talking about 2010 either, but I digress.

ETA: Am I allowed to pull for Holland this afternoon?
