Why is academics even mentioned?

I keep seeing arguments about the academics of the SEC keeping UT out. I would argue that the academics are on par with the Big12, although certainly it is lower than the Pac10 and Big10.
But why does it even matter? It's not like we are competing for the collegiate quiz bowl championship. There is another post with a link to a UT site that says it would be a bad move for A&M to come to the SEC because we don't have the same R&D dollars as the Big10. The R&D funds are not distributed throughout the conference. However, the television and bowl money is distributed, and the SEC is king in that area.
You could maybe argue that being in a conference with a lower overall academic performance could hurt a school's reputation, but it certainly hasn't affected Vanderbilt's reputation as a strong academic institution.

because the different schools mandate different entrance requirements for their members. Schools like Texas wouldn't want to compete with SEC schools with lower entrance requirements for the same players, same conference.

One of the big reasons Vandy sucks is because their academic requirements are so high. The opposite effect is true with schools with lower academic requirements. You don't want a school in your conference who accepts any athlete, regardless of grades. It gives them an advantage.

No they are not. Big 12 had 7 AAU member universities while SEC has only 2.

Texas doesn't want to join the SEC because they can't really bully the conference like they canthe Big 12 and could the new Pac-10 if they carried five schools with them. Academics is a cover story. It has always been a figleaf.

A lot of pretentious people out there, even though 90% of public institutions are exactly the same.
