This question is specifically addressed to those who hate Miles and "wish he'd gone to Michigan" in 2007 (although all responses are welcome):

If you could re-write history and make it so that Miles accepted the Michigan job in 2007, would you?

Necessary qualifications and assumptions:

1. LSU loses the SEC title game (and does not play in the national title) if Les leaves.

2. LSU is able to hire the best available coach after the bowl season. Please do not respond and say "Sure, if it means we get Saban or Meyers." Neither would have left their job for LSU. I personally do not remember which candidates we would have been interested in or had a shot at but you can assume we'd hire the best person we had a legitimate shot at (i.e., not Sean Payton).

3. Such coach does not win a national title in either the 2008 or 2009 season. Going forward, who knows.

4. Assume the 2008 and 2009 seasons would be better than what actually happened in those season (maybe win the west one year).

Personally, I wouldn't give up a national title for the chance of greater future success. No matter who the coach is, we might not win another in the next 20 years. Bird in the hand thing.

And if you hate all the assumptions or don't think they are realistic, don't respond. I just get sick of hearing "I wish Les had gone to Michigan" when no one really knows what the result of that would have been.

as much as I would love to see Les Miles depart Baton Rouge that requirement alone prohibits me from wishing it had occurred in 2007. National championships are hard to come by and any plague is worth winning one.

Screw assumption number 4 and say LSU finishes with the same record in 2008 and 2009. Everybody would be bitching about how we LOST Les Miles who was 33-7 in his 3 years at LSU and that he had stabilized the program among the nation's elite tier of teams and that the guy who took over has run it back into the ground..... and we'd be clamoring for Miles return..

Good post ChiSaint (even though there are about 50 of these a day. For all of the Miles haters right now, remember that hindsight is always 20/20. In 2007 I'm sure the vast majority of those calling for his head today were celebrating the fact that he spurned his beloved alma mater to stay at LSU. Now after 2 "sub-par" years its time for a change and the administration was crazy for giving this guy such a HUGE buyout in '07. Yet, thats I'm sure exactly what they had to do in order to keep him at LSU. I was never a huge fan of the hire, but I can't complain too much with 2 SECCG apearances and a NC in 5 years. If he wins this year, the axels on the bandwagon may break with everyone jumping back on.

Who knows about 2008, though. We had a pretty good offense all things considered. If we had a somewhat competent defense, we could have had a fantastic season.

Why are your possible scenarios all negative? Who's to say that had Miles left, the players would have still won the game that day, and won a national title.

If we're going to talk in "what if's" you have to include both sides, not just the worst case scenario.
