Interestingly, on the "When you're there, you're Family" theme, the NY Times a couple of weeks ago did a piece about the trend in Italy is these groups setting up experiences for travellers to go and actually dine in Italian homes.

I don't know if that's something you might be into, but could be worth a look.

I ate at Counts home at a vineyard in Anzio, Italy about an hour outside Rome right on the coast and spot of the allied troop landing of WWII.

Increadable food, wine, sceanery and stories the Count told me.

Its been 5 years and I know the vineyard was open for tours. But I am not sure how you can arrange to have dinner with the Count himself.
I was with a group on a private tour.
