How bad are the Atlanta Braves?

5 straight losses.
3rd to last in the NL in runs per game with 3.9
Last in the NL in batting average
4 regular starters batting under .200
3rd to last in home runs
Time to panic?

1 page before this turns into a Heyward thread

Panicing this early is stupid. The only team essentially eliminated as of today is the Baltimore Orioles.

just as bad as the Astros who saw that coming?

This. Haven't even finished the first full month yet. Got 5 more to go.

This is the third year in a row the bats have gotten off to a slow start. Is it time to make a change at hitting coach? I loved Terry Pendleton as a player, but perhaps it's time for him to find another gig.

I've got MLB At Bat (radio broadcasts) this year for the first time, and I've listened to a lot of Orioles games.
I know you know this already, but this team is not nearly as bad as their record would reflect. (or at the very least they show a lot of hope for the future IMO).
Wieters is having a very good year. Wigginton has caught fire lately. Makarkis is pretty much out of his beginning-of-the-year slump. Jones is going to get out of his slump. I like what I saw (heard) from Hughes over the weekend.
And, on the mound, solid performances from Millwood and Guthrie. Lots of promise from Matusz and dare I say, Hernandez.
I'm new to following the team, but it seems their biggest weakness is bullpen. Do they have anything coming up in the minors?

Well it's way to early to tell if the whole team is just in a slump or if the bats really are this terrible. Bobby has got to mix up the line up at this point. I would be way more dramatic but at the very least he has to start Hinske over Glaus til he finds his swing and/or Hinske proves he can't be an everyday player.
I would also move Heyward up to the 5 spot and just hope and pray we can find a leadoff hitter.

They couldn't get a run across on Phillies starters in three games last week at home..
Not exactly a problem at all by every other team the Phils have played this year.
Phils margin over .500 is all Halladay's W-L column..despite a series schedule of Nats twice, Stros, Braves, Az, thus far..mediocre bullpen, Kendrick bombed in all but Atl outing, old man Moyer too.
Too bad for the Braves they didn't get to hammer Hamels.

Injuries have been killer as well - losing Pie and Roberts has been huge. Jones and Markakis also picked a bad time to slump.
But yeah, all in all, I'm happy with where the organization is. They still need to address the corners and wait on the pitching, but the pieces are there for the next good Orioles team. and I really want them to flip Scott for something useful.

quote:This is the one issue I don't understand. It doesn't matter who bats first, they stink it up. Prado, who's batting over .400, was moved to the leadoff spot and immediately went 0-5 and asked to be moved back to 2nd. No one wants to be the leadoff hitter now, it's crazy.
just hope and pray we can find a leadoff hitter.

Haz? They looked terrible against the mets. In fact they looked worse than the Mets. Lackadiasical and unorganized.

What's your opinion of Rhyne Hughes?

Exactly.
5 of the 9 Atlanta regulars in the lineup are batting under .190. No way in hell that can stay the same so you have to expect the hitting to pick up as the season goes on. Do the Braves need another bat in a big way? Absolutely and hopefully that comes mid season but until then, the team just needs to start playing baseball better which means just being able to hit behind the runner or put the ball in the outfield with a runner on 3rd base and simple stuff like that. Every single run matters on this team with the pitching staff that we have so we just need to do the small things better.
Things will pick up though. Let's take 2 out of 4 against the Cards then take care of business against the Stros and Nats and we'll be fine. Come back in a month or month and a half and maybe I'll be panicing then.

Isn't he with the Rays? He's the guy who is supposed to take Pena's spot when they let him walk. If he's a Rays prospect, he'll work out. Those guys are awesome at evaluating talent.

Would be just what the lineup needs but I just don't wanna do the deal and get screwed at the end of next year and be without a 1B of the future, especially with the potential of how much better the rotation could be in 2013 than it is right now(scary to think about). It would take a lot to get him but I would completely be for this trade ONLY if we would be willing to fork up the money to sign him long term.

This guy . Just brought up over the weekend. He was the guy with the Rays. He was the player to be named later in the Zaun trade.

A 313/361/533 line in AAA is pretty good. but he's already 26, so its pretty much sink or swim time for him. He can't be worse than Atkins, right?
