Did LSU finish 3rd in the SEC because of great coaching?

From everyone's posts about LSU not having any talent, how did we win 9 games and finish 3rd overall in the SEC? If it wasn't the talent, then it must have been great coaching.
You people amaze me. How can you say that Miles wins on talent alone, and then turn around and say that LSU has no talent because no one was drafted in the first 2 rounds? Then how is LSU still winning? Because, beieve it or not, there were 9 other teams in the league wishing to have a better record that LSU last season.

This has nothing to do with LSU lacking talent. It's a lack of fully developing talent. In college, teams can get by on lots of talent, but if the players aren't developed pro teams won't take them.
Look at LaFell. Was great for us, but no team would touch him until the middle of the 3rd round. Same for Jones. We still have lots of talent and they are "good", but not great pro prospects based on their development.

When LaFell was discussed, Kiper said Lafell was hampered by poor QB play, and rarely had well thrown passes to him...Glad he straightened that out for me...

Players drafted in first 3 rounds:
Alabama - 5
Arkansas - 0
Auburn - 1
Florida - 7
Georgia - 1
Kentucky - 1
LSU - 2
Miss - 2
Miss St. - 0
SC - 0
Tenn - 3
Vandy - 1
So really, were we that much better or worse compared to the other teams outside of Florida and Bama?

Did Bradford and Dez Bryant really "develop" at their respective schools by taking the year off, hurt and suspended?

Moral Victory - LSU and Ole Miss each have 2 players drafted in first 3 rounds! Florida has 7, Bama has 5, and Tenn has 3. Does this mean we're tied for 4th place in the SEC draft sweepstakes? Or is this another testament to those great recruiting classes and player development of same?

Look at LaFell.
Lafell went in the 3rd for 3 reasons:
1)Not fast enough (coaches fault?)
2)Dropping balls kids in HS can catch (coaches fault?)
3)Poor QB play (this is a combination of youth and coaching).
Jones went in the 3rd for 2 reasons:
1)Not fast enough at the combine (coaches fault?)
2)Poor combine strength results (coaches fault?)
I promise if Jones or Lafell run 4.3 or even 4.4, they would go in the 1st round

That being said I believe Lafell and Jones can and will be successful in the NFL.

no, we finished third because of chad jones' fingertips, the celebration penalty against AJ green, and a little bit of dumb luck as well.
Offensive coaching was obscene to even the most casual observer.
Defensive coaching was adequate.

I'll bite....
Only because I'm drinking.
One post and run.
Are you telling me this great coach you speak of has nothing to do with the talent drop off since the departure of the last coaching staff?
And personally I'm not rationalizing shite with the lack of LSU players taken. I watched the product on the field. I was there for the coaching mishaps. I know the embarrasments discussed nationally over the media.
I'm not specifically saying Miles is a horrible coach, cuz I'm not prepared for that pissing match at this second. But I will say he deserves all the heat he got this year from his blunders.

Blunders? Besides the Ole Miss debacle, which ones are you talking about?

Miles and his staff have done a good job with several players. I think he tries to make the right hires and has done well on a few and poor on a few. That happens in coaching as nobody is perfect.
I don't think its a matter of coaching kids up as much as the attitude of the team and coaches. It was posted recently by someone and I've recalled reading it several other places that LSU players over the past few years have been getting bad reps for coming in an not focusing, taking a laissez-faire attitude to things and not pushing hard. They've also been said to be out of shape.
This is where Miles' personality comes into play. He's a nice guy coach and laid back often. This translates to players and their personalities over time.
In the end, while our # of draft picks has dropped these past few drafts, we are a little spoiled with the talent of those 2005-2007 teams. The current teams are definitely talented, but realistically, they aren't to that level now.
