I think the point is that CJ/MAR did it out of (many would say misguided) political and religious beliefs ... not out of spite. Most folks would argue there's a statute of limitations on being a dumbass. Even if he still believes it.

Not only that, but he wasn't doing it for spectacle. In fact, he tried to hide it, but was found himself at the wrong place one night, and the rest is history.
There are few people in this world that I am more willing to forgive than that guy. From everything I've heard about him, he's a great person, even if he was gullible enough to get mixed up with some less than stellar associations.
