Because his movies are long, meandering exercises in mental masturbation that essentially go nowhere. Magnolia was a punishingly awful film, Boogie Nights falls apart in the second act, Punch Drunk Love is probably 30 minutes too long, though I do like it. And I've gone on too many diatribes about how TWBB is an awful movie, so I'll spare you the long version, but the short version of it is overly long and goes nowhere works.

It's called an editor. Hire one.
