to master an activity, it helps to practice the actual activity.
If the other best players are in the AAU then you wont see that level of competition until you are in college and you may not be able to adapt.
The other thing you need besides competition and practice is good coaching. If the coach in your town's high school plays 3-2 zone and you want to learn man to man, you better have an alternative set up.
