The Shawshank Redemption is the first one that comes to mind for me.

I would have taken Pulp Fiction over Shawshank and Forrest Gump in 1994.
L.A. Confidential should have won over Titantic IMO in 97.
There are tons of great movies that didn't win best picture though.

This and Pulp Fiction
My two favorites that didn't win, and they came out the same year and both got beaten out by Forest fricking Gump.

Didn't remember that they were the same year, but I agree that L.A. Confidential was better.

That's where I'll have to disagree, but most people would agree with you. I am the only person I know who didn't even like Saving Private Ryan. I keep saying I'll give it another chance, but that's hard to do with a movie you didn't like the first time.
I really liked Shakespeare in Love.

I thought Michael Clayton would have won in '07.
Fantastic movie.
Fantastic movie.

I going with with Citzen Kane. Of ocurse, How Geen Was My Valley isn't exactly Shakespeare in Love either. The problem with Shawshank, is that it was up against Forrest Gump, which isn't exactly blah blah blah you get my point.

My personal opinion wold be Star Wars. I am in the minority on that because I still see articles praising the academy for giving the nod to Annie Hall that year over Star Wars. Whatever.

As far as the best movie to not win, I must state that there were 3 movies that should have won the best picture in this example..
I know its a classic and I love it as well, but it most definately should have been nominated, and thats it...
1976...Rocky!
It beat out Taxi Driver, Network, and All the Presidents Men for fricks sake!
I know this statement may be blasphemous, but as far as it being better than those three movies, I wholeheartedly disagree!!

Apocalypse Now. (Winner was a long-forgotten Kramer v. Kramer.)

WTF? Long forgotten? How old are you?
I agree that Apocalypse Now as better, but Kramer v. Kramer was a good flick. It pissed me off, royally, but that's what you were supposed to feel.
If you're correct, and K v. K is "long forgotten", then that's a cryin' shame. What do you youngesters say on this topic? Is K v. K "long forgotten"?
