Billy Cannon was my orthodontist in my teens. I asked him about the old AFL and some players I remembered in my youth. Once I asked him about Lance Alworth. I remember Alworth running away from just about everyone when he caught a pass and he was a 9.6 sprinter in high school. Well Billy told me that Lance wasn't all that fast but he could jump like a deer and could time his leap just right to be the one to catch the ball instead of the defensive backs. So to Billy Cannon, Alworth wasn't all that fast. I would say that no way Cannon could run a 3.9 forty but he was in the 9.3-9.4 range for 100 yards definitely.

Billy Cannon is one of those rare athletes who would still be considered an elite player 50 years after his prime. I cannot accept a 3.9/40 time but the speed he did possess would still be considered blistering even by today's standards. In the best possible way, this guy was a freak.
