I didn't know that he:

Ran 3.9 secs in a 40-yard dash

and 9.4 secs in a 100 yds.

Wikipedia:

In football, he scored 39 touchdowns his senior year, was named All-State and All-America and led his high school to a state championship in 1955. He would later run the 100 yard dash in 9.4 seconds, and the 40 yard dash in 3.9 seconds. He put a 16-pound shot 54 feet.[

I don't believe those times. Usain Bolt can't run that fast on a track.

Yea, Cannon was way ahead of his time. He would be a stud if he was playing today.

That would project to roughly a 10.18 100 meters.

Cannon was plenty fast, but I seriously doubt those numbers to be accurate. Cannon was faster than most people on the field even when he was playing tight end for The Raiders.

FWIW:

Cannon won the 1958 SEC Championship Meet 100 yard dash with a time of 9.9 seconds (Cannon's track teammate, Ralph Fabian, won that event the next year with a time of 10.0 seconds).

I can almost guarantee you that he did neither.

Here's an excerpt from a 2003 article that gives some stats on Cannon. Cannot vouch for their accuracy.

quote:

He was a magnificent athlete, a 6-foot-1, 225-pounder who ran 100 yards in 9.4 seconds, threw the shot-put 54 feet and bench-pressed 435 pounds.
