How many hours are spent in the classroom by the professors? I read an article that being a college professor was one of the best jobs in the world.
Many of my professors at LSU tought a single 3-hour course and had only a couple of hours a week that they were available in their offices.

Which Biology instructors may be getting the knife? I'm sure I will know most of them.
I dont know off hand but the Dean Kevin Carman said biological sciences will be hit very hard by the possible cuts in July.
This is happening all over the country? What universities are laying off 300+ instructors? Many universities are undergoing cuts but schools like Washington and Arizona are cutting satellite campuses. They stress its vital to keep the core at a university strong. LSU is gutting theirs.

Biological sciences will be one of the hardest hit. There will be nobody to teach the intro biology courses. As a result tenured faculty will be required to teach many more classes.
Bingo. The catch 22 is that the tenured faculty have contracts which state that they aren't required more than a certain # of classes (I believe it's one per semester; I could be wrong). Most of them will agree to teach more in light of this situation, but theoretically they could say no and there wouldn't be a damn thing the university could do.

THE GOVERNOR
Wrong guy. Blame the source - Edwin Edwards. He's the one that set the policy to the state having to cut ONLY two departments - health care and education. Jindal has no choice but to make cuts at LSU.

Faculty do work 40 hours a week and more. It's more than just time in the classroom. They have to grade, read papers, advise graduate students on their writing and research, and conduct their own reserach. To get tenure at LSU you have to publish a lot and or bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in research money.
Plus LSU faculty make less money that professors at places like Texas, UCLA, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, and North Carolina.
Now, I think we can all agree that LSU shouuld be in the same league as Texas, UCLA, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, and North Carolina both academically and athletically.
When you go look for a job and want to move up in your career a good portion of how much money you're offered and how desireable you are among companies is where you went to school.
Michigan and UCLA could 0-12 in football and yet their academic reputations wouldn't be tarnished one bit. Some of you need realize that for Louisiana to have continued economic success a world-class research university like LSU is a must and frick Tulane.

GTFO with that type of shite. Seriously. Teachers complaining make me sick.
Why would I answer any of the questions that have been directed to me in this thread? All they have been are weak attempts to test my knowledge on the subject. Who gives a damn how much a grad assistant, instructor, professor, etc makes? Furthermore, who gives a damn if someone has to google something to find an answer? Isn't that the point of a search engine? For someone who's job revolves around educating others, you seem to be failing miserably at it.
Instead of trying to insult me with your intellect, put it to good use and enlighten me on the subject. Because, after all, this is a website dedicated to LSU athletics not academics.

You do realize that both California and Michigan are on the verge of being bankrupt? So it is okay for the schools to be good in research while unemployment in the states are above the national average and the states can hardly afford to keep the doors open? The states have to cut spending, I'm not saying they cant do it other places but hey have to cut it from somewhere. If not education then where? Entitlement programs? We are lucky to have an athletics program that helps support the university, many other programs are a drain on the universities they represent. you want to save jobs in the schools cut title 9 for athletic programs, if it doesn't pay for itself, cut it. But then that would go against all liberal ideology.

Michigan is in better shape than California in regards to their budget, but both are in tough shape. But cutting education is absolutely the wrong thing to do if you wish to raise the incomes of a state and provide for industries that offer more stable employment.
Now last time I checked Michigan and UCLA had great atheltic programs and continue to have world-class academic reputations. I think it's great LSU athletic department pays for itself and makes a profit, but LSU needs to be seen as an educational instution first. It would be best for LSU if the profit making athletic program shifted its profits to the academic side after offering fair raises and paying for maintenance and reasonable upgrades in facilties.
Why can't LSU have both?
Additionally the last time I checked Michigan and California had lower rates of poverty than Louisiana, higher per capita icomes and a higher percentage of people with college degrees versus Louisiana and they both have universities with well-regarded athletic programs with multiple national championships: UCLA, Cal Michigan, Michigan State, etc in sports like football, basketball, and hockey and many others.

Off topic but yes and no to that. Most employers will admit that the biggest thing that gets a person hired on is whether or not the employer simply likes the person he's interviewing and can see himself working with the person. If a person walks into an interview with a degree from Harvard but comes across as a little snot nose punk know-it-all, he may as well wipe his arse with that degree because he'll play hell getting hired.

Professors bring in millions of dollars in research grants. LSU is a great school on the rise academically and its professors will be bringing in millions more in the coming years. The potential for dollars earned in the research and academic world blow football money out of the water at big time academic institutions. Research expenditures nation wide been on the rise during the economic downturn. Four universities this year earned over a billion dollars in research for the first time in history.
The school and the tax payer play little to no part of the coaches salary. It all comes from both the program's revenues as well as private donations. the fact is 93K people pay 504 a head to watch the Tigers play ball. If the programs wants to use self generated money to pay the coaches that is their right.

But they are not gutting the core of the school like LSU is set to do.
The economy is very bad in Michigan, California, and OH also. Louisiana's economy never really suffered here thanks to the 200Billion the feds gave for Katrina.
