finally starting to play well. 24pts 12 boards last night. if he can keep improving the blazers will be really good.

He will. Mcmillan is making sure they feed him the ball. Blake was benched immediately not to long ago for not passing it to him. Injury free is what I am really looking for though.

you forgot to mention the best part.
24pts 12 boards 2 blocks in TWENTY SEVEN MINUTES!
Ol Babyface might be coming around.

He's been solid all year when not in foul trouble, which is about half of Portland's games

He's always in foul trouble. Durability + Foul Trouble will be his biggest road blocks in the NBA.

Is there anything in Oden's past that makes one think he can or will stay healthy?

alot of young bigs get in foul trouble. shaq used to foul out alot when he first got started.

yeah but shaq came into the league averaging about 30 ppg at oden's current age (he may have been younger)

shaq was oden's age. 3 years of college= 1 year of college + out for a season + played last year.
Oden 40 mpg numbers compare favorably. Shaq also had the benefit statwise of starting and playing big minutes for a terrible team.

not in terms of PF

oden would get similar minutes if he could avoid getting in foul trouble in 2/3 of his games

yes, he is looking better.
3 years in and the greatest big man since Kareem is outperforming Joel Pryzbilla.

kareem wouldn't even be in the league at his age. start the comparison next year.

he'll learn slo. This is not going to be the last time you see 24 and 12 out of him.

why?
absolute age comparisons are silly across generations. A 20 year player of today is MUCH further along in his development curve than players of decades ago due to AAU ball, longer highschool and college seasons, more camps, specialized training/coaching, etc.

if we're speaking in generalities maybe, but
you think 4 years with John Wooden is the same as a year of college ball with one hand, an injury sit out season, and one year in the pros?
come on. you're the one comparing him to kareem. not me.

no, i thought it was absurd, but those were the comparisons mentioned about Oden coming out of OSU.

yes. i think an accelerated development virtually his entire life, and multiple years as a pro is better than 4 years (only playing 3 i believe) with John Wooden 4 decades ago when the game was totally different.

but he's playing against people with accelerated development all their lives too.

this....he just doesn't get enough minutes most nights because he fouls too much

of course he is. He is playing against his peers, just as Alcindor/Kareem did.
eta, and just looked. Oden is 22, same age as Kareem when he put up sick numbers as a rookie. Just pointing out how silly the hype was with this kid.

He has a very good backup. Besides Roy no one on that team logs a ton of minutes. They have a very deep bench. Oden fouls too much imo but is allowed to be aggressive considering he has a backup that can really contribute. He does need to work on his fouls as there is a decent chance pryzbilla doesn't resign after the year.
