GO YANKEES...this argument has always been a fallacious one. The Steinbrenner family has always been willing to invest in their team because they are proud of it and love the winning tradition. Unlike small market, low payroll teams whose owners don't give a damn about winning, the Steinbrenners are happy to pump money in to build a contender.
Take a look at the largest payrolls in baseball...Mets, Red Sox and Tigers all come close. Case closed.

The Yankees pay a huge "luxury" tax to the smaller market teams in the majors. The idea is to help those teams afford players. However, there is no rule that requires they spend the money on player salaries, and most of the owners take the money out and spend it on their yachts, second (or third) homes, etc. No sympathy. Geaux Yanks!
