A summary of the four-inning scrimmage yesterday:
Gold 8, Purple 0
The Gold squad dominated the Purple squad, both offensively and defensively, in their intrasquad scrimmage at Alex Box Stadium yesterday. Freshman righthander Mike Reed and Freshman lefthander Zach LaSuzzo held the Purple batters hitless and allowed only one baserunner through the four inning scrimmage. Reed struck out four of the six hitters he faced. The Gold, though, were busy putting runs on the scoreboard in three of the four innings. Freshman outfielder Trey Watkins and Sophomore outfielder Mikie Mahtook led the hitting attack with home runs. Mahtook's solo blast came in the first after two runs had already scored. Mahtook also led off the third with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by first baseman Kyle Koeneman which was misplayed in center field. Watkins hit a three-run homer in the second, following walks to Wet Delatte and Johnny Dishon. In the field, Gold shortstop Austin Nola was busy with five assists on ground balls and also recorded an out on a soft line drive by Grant Dozar to end the Purple's only scoring threat. Freshman Mason Katz had walked with two out in the third and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Nola's grab ended the inning. The Purple squad managed to hit only two balls out of the infield, and both were routine fly ball outs.
