Back in the 70's and 80's LSU frequently used a two-QB system. The idea was to give them both game experience.
The advantages were that if one of them was having a bad day, the other could pick up the slack. Also if one got injured, the other didn't need to warm up, he was ready to go.
Even all-american and future all=pro Bert Jones benefitted from this system. I remember several times when he wasn't playing well, and Paul Lyons took over and and rallied the team.
The current coaches don't seem to like that system. They will stick with the designated QB for a long time before they give the other a chance. If he's having a bad day, he has to do a lot of damage before he is replaced. Then when he is replaced it becomes a humiliating experience.
