Archie Manning 1970 story

LSU played Ole Miss in 1970 - Archie Manning had a hurt arm with a cast. They didnt like Manning or Ole Miss - gave them the only loss in 69 (26-23)
Revenge was on their mind
The Defensive front four made a decision.
If LSU was winning, they would play aggressive but keep Manning in;
However, if Manning was playing exceptional, well, they were going to go after his arm...
Needless to say LSU won 61 to 17.
What will our Defense do if Tebow plays?

Remember that game. LSU had the ball at the end of the game. Went out of bounds around the 30 with several seconds left but the clock didn't stop. Maybe the 17-16 game several years later was a little payback.

Archie who?
I remember that. IIRC there was even posters with "Archie Who" showing him with his arm in a cast or something.

I am betting that Tebow will be smart enough to stand on the ready ready and not go in. You cannot expect players to hold back. If he puts himself in danger, then whatever happens is his own fault.

Bishop. Who was your dad and what years did he play?

I watched that game and rooted for Ole Miss. refinery blew up 10 miles from here and windows shook. I baby sat that night to cover for my sisster so she could go out. The kid I baby sat for is now a US General

I remember the '70 Ole Miss game very well. Vaught was heavily criticized for putting Archie in with the cast on his arm. Rightfully so.
The LSU defense did lighten up on him, especially after the game was in control. I read in a newspaper a couple of weeks later that McClendon received a letter from Manning's mother thanking him for this. She was not happy with Vaught and the Ole Miss administration.
By the way, IMHO Archie Manning was a far more dangerous QB than Tebow. And the "Archie Who" nonsense originated with Tennessee, not LSU. But that's another story...

I was standing on the visitors sideline after
the game when Archie was leaving the field.
A young boy went up to Archie and asked for
his wrist band, he stopped pulled it off and
gave it to the kid. I've always thought that
showed a lot of class after the night he had
been through.

Not an Ole Miss fan, but a big fan of Archie. Not only a great talent, but a class act.

The Manning family are Louisiana treasures.
