NEW ORLEANS - Is Mark Sanchez developing a reputation as a cheap-shot artist? On Darren Sharper's 99-yard interception return Sunday, Sanchez gave chase and - for some reason - dived at the legs of former Jets LB Jonathan Vilma, who was blocking. Sanchez was flagged for a personal foul.
"He got my knees," Vilma said. "Thank God, I didn't get hurt. I hope he gets fined for it, like Brett Favre in the preseason."
In the season opener, Sanchez was penalized for a similar infraction while giving chase on a long fumble return for a touchdown.

"for some reason" is that he's a QB who is not trained to block. illegal? yes. cheap shot? not quite.

Did anyone else see when Sanchez came out of the tunnel he drug his finger under his nose, as if to acknowledge the Dirty Sanchez?

What doesn't make any sense to me at all is why in the hell he would do that. He had no chance of making the tackle, and cut blocking Vilma only helped to almost get him hurt.

If you go back and look at it you will see the reason he did it. He thought there was someone behind him that might be able to make a tackle on Sharper if he took out the blocker. As soon as he made the hit he looked back to see if someone was there to do it. As soon as he saw he was the only player there he shook his head as to say "Damn I did all that for nothing" At least thats how I saw it.

I saw it as Sanchez had two options...
a) Get knocked the frick out by Vilma
b) Go down before he gets knocked the frick out and might as well fall at his legs

+1 Looking at the replay on youtube it is clear he no chance in hell of getting to Sharper. That is why it looks to me like a cheapish shot.

Who was he trying to block for?
He's a QB and will get fined, but he was just putting a bullseye on his back for the rest of the game. The only person he hurt was himself.

Would have been great to see Vilma rip his helmet off and mash his face in... then be like, "oh, i was trying stop you from potentially ending my career cause your bitch arse made a dumb arse mistake, my bad".
